After completing several borehole site investigations in London this week Geoinvestigate’s Jack Harper is predicting a significant increase in clay shrinkage subsidence claims this year. Jack said the run of warm dry weather this summer has increased the soil moisture deficit to near critical levels and I am expecting a flurry of subsidence claims. I would be very surprised if it doesn’t happen.
Of the 4 sites Jack looked at all showed signs of severe moisture depletion caused by trees. In one case involving London Clay and a Willow the clay was hard, fissured and almost shattered to a depth of 3m and roots were clearly visible, juicy and rapacious. Jack said it’s the first time he’s noted polishing or slickensides on the surfaces of the clay fissures. The fabric of the building itself was badly damaged and its floors had subsided.

In addition to providing borehole site investigation services Geoinvestigate also provides services in the areas of geotechnical and geo-environmental consultancy, walk-over surveys, borehole drilling, site investigation, Phase 1 desk studies, Phase 2 site investigations, drilling and testing, landfill gas surveys and contaminated land investigations with full remediation and validation strategies.
Geoinvestigate would be pleased to quote for your next geotechnical, geo-environmental, engineering geology, contaminated land or borehole site investigation services in St Albans, Luton, Watford or Stevenage.
